An amount of $37 200 will be allocated to the Laurentian Literacy Council inc. of Argenteuil who is involved in literacy training, which will bring the total amount granted to $110 802 for 2016-2017. This financial assistance comes from the additional $9 million allocated to the Programme d’action communautaire sur le terrain de l’éducation (PACTE) for this same period.
Yves St-Denis, the MNA for Argenteuil, made this announcement today on behalf of the Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports, Minister of Families and Minister responsible for the Gaspésie—Îles-de-la-Madeleine region, Sébastien Proulx.
On December 2, 2016, Mr. Proulx announced close to $20 million of additional funding for the many partners who are dedicated to literacy training and educational success, including $9 million to PACTE. This new assistance is over and above the $18.3 million already allocated to the program and is intended to consolidate the funding of the independent community action groups who are involved in literacy training, encouraging students to stay in school or return to school, and continuing education.
“For several years now, the Laurentian Literacy Council and its team members have been doing a tremendous job in promoting literacy and helping people of our community who presents difficulty with reading and writing. It is essential to give the resources the centre need to carry out its missions. By increasing the budget of the Programme d’action communautaire sur le terrain de l’éducation by 50%, the government has demonstrated its commitment to taking action in this regard”, mentioned the MNA for Argenteuil.
“This investment will enable us to consolidate the funding for key partners. They will then be able to carry out their missions more actively and better respond to the needs of their clientele. This is a priority for our government because their many efforts and commitment to young people make it possible for these organizations to go a long way in promoting educational success”, added Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports, Minister of Families and Minister responsible for the Gaspésie—Îles-de-la-Madeleine region.
“It is with great joy that the City of Lachute receives this announcement which will help the Laurentian Literacy Centre and its team in achieving their mission. We are very fortunate to have numerous organizations in Lachute who are working relentlessly to provide literacy services among the community. This grant demonstrates the significant value of these organizations and we are proud of the support they bring to our citizens”, declared le mayor of Lachute, Carl Péloquin.
For his part, the LLC board president, Jim Warbanks declared: “With a solid group of experienced and enthusiastic volunteers in place, and strong community support, this additional PACTE funding , after marginal increases for years, will allow us to better serve the evident literacy needs in our area.”
